30,000 visitors expected at the second leg
ISKANDAR PUTERI, JOHOR, 11 October 2016 – Khazanah Nasional Berhad (“Khazanah”), UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise”) and Iskandar Investment Berhad (“IIB”) continue to join forces for ISKARNIVAL 2016; this time organising ISKARNIVAL NARATIF taking place on 15 and 16 October 2016 at the Mall of Medini in Iskandar Puteri (formerly known as Nusajaya), Johor.
With visitors expected to number 30,000, ISKARNIVAL NARATIF is the second leg of a three-part ISKARNIVAL 2016 celebration and follows the success of ISKARNIVAL KREATIF which took place on 17 to 18 September 2016 at Mall of Medini.
While ISKARNIVAL KREATIF was a platform to stimulate creativity and innovation, ISKARNIVAL NARATIF aims to promote numerous forms of storytelling and building narratives. The two-day affair will be staged at 10 venues surrounding Mall of Medini; featuring 128 events and 595 talents focusing on the art of storytelling, artistic exploration, inspirational sources and techniques, dialogues and workshops, poetry ‘slam’ or ‘spoken word’, numerous traditional and contemporary cultural performances.
The festival is set to encourage the exchange of ideas and elevate the rakyat’s sense of appreciation for Johor’s rich heritage and culture; at the same time narrate the evolving story of Iskandar Puteri through the shaping of the area’s identity and character.
Invited speakers will host open dialogue sessions to share their insights on the emerging new film industry in Malaysia. Visitors to ISKARNIVAL NARATIF will also be entertained with film screenings, musical performances, stand-up comedy act, writers and scriptwriting workshop, forum, indie book fest, vintage bazaar, shadow play from Kelantan, graphic design exhibition and more.
Present at the ISKARNIVAL NARATIF’s media briefing was Adeputra Masri, a Johor-born artist whose art pieces promotes the theme of Iskandar Puteri and Johor and encourages the interaction and sharing of experiences between photography enthusiasts and global travelers. Also present was Yana Rizal of PUSAKA, a non-profit organisation that supports the continuity and viability of traditional art performance in Malaysia; as well as Seyn Jukey and Vinh of Projek Rabak, a platform for those who are interested in creating and sharing art.
Other exciting happenings that will take place at ISKARNIVAL NARATIF include musical performances by Talitha Tan, Gabriel Lynch and Fynn Jamal while forum speakers include Jahabar Sadiq, Eddin Khoo and Saidah Rastam. Poetry slams will be conducted by Poetry Café, Tulang Kata and Poet vs Wild. International and local comedians will also be on hand such as Lawak Tak Kelakar which will feature Indonesian top stand-up comedy act Mo Sidek and our locals JD Raja Lawak, Bob Comel, Shashic, Judith, Hilmy Ashley.
Another highlight at ISKARNIVAL NARATIF is I.M. Shorties 2016, a short film competition for emerging talents to develop and present their stories creatively. Themed “Experience Iskandar Malaysia”, submissions for the competition may cover topics, events and stories on social, economic as well as environmental experiences within Iskandar Malaysia.
Visitors to ISKARNIVAL NARATIF will also be able to browse through over 100 vendors selling vintage items, indie books as well as homemade items or works of arts. There will also be comic and art workshops for the children as well as an Enchanted Forest built for them to experience a fantasy-like environment where story-telling sessions will be conducted.
All activities, workshops, bazaars and programmes will start from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. during the weekend festival. For the convenience of visitors, complimentary Causeway Link shuttle bus services will be provided from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Larkin Central and Johor Bahru Central, with the final stop being Mall of Medini.

The third and last leg of ISKARNIVAL 2016 will be ISKARNIVAL SAMA-SAMA, a carnival like event bringing people together through live entertainment, participatory activities and many types of music, dance and cultural performance as well as fireworks and a scrumptious al-fresco food from a myriad of food trucks and F&B outlets. This will be held on 12 to 13 November 2016 at Puteri Harbour.
Organised with the support of the State Government of Johor and Johor Bahru Tengah Municipal Council, the main objective of ISKARNIVAL is to foster community ties and socio-economic inclusiveness which is key to the sustainable future of Iskandar Malaysia, the country’s southernmost economic corridor. In addition, ISKARNIVAL aims to highlight the many opportunities available in the new ‘creative economy’ for the rakyat especially Johoreans, as well as showcase talents developed over the last ten years of Iskandar Malaysia’s inception and history.
