427 Students Benefit From UEM Sunrise’s 2016 Library Enhancement Programme

UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise”), one of Malaysia’s leading property developers through its corporate responsibility initiatives, officially opened the newly-refurbished library of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar in Gelang Patah today.

UEM Sunrise’s Library Enhancement Programme is an educational support programme implemented by PINTAR Foundation under Core Module 2. It aims to support its PINTAR Adopted Schools by raising academic performance and inculcate good reading habits among the students. The programme also strives to provide financial support and assistance in acquiring reading materials as well as upgrading facilities based on a ‘need basis’.

The school’s library previously housed approximately 4,000 outdated and obsolete publications with a low book-per-student ratio – 9 books per students as compared to Ministry of Education’s recommended 20 books per student. The library interior was also in need of enhancement and maintenance in order to provide an appropriate reading environment.

Through the Library Enhancement Programme, UEM Sunrise sponsored and contributed English and Malay reading materials exclusively selected for primary school students comprising reference books, fiction, general knowledge and many more. The library interior, equipment and furniture were also refurbished for total value of RM42,000.

Each year, one UEM Sunrise PINTAR Adopted School will be selected to benefit from this programme. This year, the 427-student Sekolah Kebangsaan Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar primary school in Gelang Patah was selected.

According to the school’s principle, Puan Haliza Jufri, “I am honored that Sekolah Kebangsaan Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar was selected this year. The library was empty with very little books but now it sports a new look with various updated books that will benefit the students”.

UEM Sunrise’s Project Director for Southern Region, Zamri Yusof said, “UEM Sunrise’s Library Enhancement Programme is aimed at providing both students and teachers better access to a more conducive resource centre. It is fundamental for a school library to be at least moderately equipped to sustain reading habits and to nurture the students to be more knowledgeable citizens with imaginative divergent thinking”.

“As a caring and responsible corporate citizen, UEM Sunrise has a responsibility not only to its employees, customers and investors, but also to the various communities in which it operates in. UEM Sunrise’s CSR policy focuses on Education Enhancement and Community Development. In implementing the Education Enhancement programmes, we are guided by the four core modules set by PINTAR Foundation to inspire the young generation to become responsible citizens through Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talent and Advocating Responsibility”, he added.

The event was officiated by Nusajaya State Assemblyman, YB Dr Haji Zaini Haji Abu Bakar. Also in attendance were representatives from the Johor Bahru District Education Office as well as PINTAR Adopted Schools’ principals and headmasters.

The Library Enhancement Programme was introduced in the year 2012 and SK Nusantara was selected as the pilot project follow
