TAPAH, 28 December 2012 – UEM Land Holdings Berhad (“UEM Land” or “the Company”), Malaysia’s largest property development company by market capitalisation and The Edge Malaysia’s 5th Top Property Developer 2012 brought some cheer to two Orang Asli communities in Tapah today, by handing over school uniforms and supplies under its inaugural “Back To School” programme.
The handing over of school uniforms and supplies was held in a ceremony that was graced by Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri Ayer Kuning, YB Dato’ Haji Samsudin Abu Hassan and attended by approximately 100 guests from Kampung Sungai Geroyang and Kampung Sungai Merbau Orang Asli communities. Also in attendance was Puan Nik Surina Suria, Head of Corporate Communication Department who represented UEM Land’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, YBhg Dato’ Wan Abdullah Wan Ibrahim, as well as local authorities from Majlis Daerah Tapah, Pejabat Polis Daerah Tapah and Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli Daerah Batang Padang.
A total of 50 school going children between the age of 7 to 17 from Kampung Sungai Geroyang and Kampung Sungai Merbau received school uniforms and a variety of school supplies including school shoes, school bags, stationery and other items amounting to RM500.00 per person. The main objective of the programme is to ease the burden of the families involved towards the preparation of their children for the upcoming 2013 school session.
The “Back To School” programme is an extension of UEM Land’s Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) mission to Tapah which began early this year. Earlier in April, UEM Land contributed more than RM30,000.00 to upgrade Perpustakaan Desa Tapah Road and enhance its overall outlook. In August, UEM Land contributed a total of RM25,000.00 to Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Darul Aitam (“BUSARAH”) for the refurbishment and maintenance of the orphanage’s multi-purpose hall.
UEM Land, which currently holds close to 2,500 acres of reserved landbank in Tapah, plans to increase its community outreach in the area by organising more engaging programmes that are in line with its CSR mission to enhance the well-being and quality of life of the community in which it operates.
In his speech that was delivered by UEM Land’s representative, Dato’ Wan Abdullah reiterated, “As a responsible corporate citizen, we are always mindful of the role we play to the communities we touch in the areas we operate and Tapah is no different. Our presence here today is a gesture of our commitment to the Tapah community and our sincere intention of improving the livelihood of those in the vicinity through various community building programmes such as this.”
The Company has been actively involved in CSR initiatives since 2006. As the master developer of Nusajaya, one of the five flagship zones of Iskandar Malaysia, UEM Land has adopted 17 PINTAR schools and five KEMAS Kindergartens in the Gelang Patah locality and supports the schools by organising a series of educational and community development programmes for an improved learning experience.
