Nusajaya, Johor, Thursday, 19 March 2015: UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise”), the master developer of Nusajaya, one of the five key nodes of Iskandar Malaysia, through its corporate social responsibility (“CSR”) initiatives programme, successfully organised the fifth motivational camp for its PINTAR secondary schools’ students at Pulai Springs Resort, Johor Bahru, during the school break recently.
Since last year, the motivational programme has been divided in two phases; Motivational Camp for students and Motivational Talk for parents. The recent motivational camp for students conducted from 17 to 19 March focused on 80 secondary PINTAR schools students aged between 16 and 17 years old. The motivational talk for the parents will be conducted in April which will involve the same group of students and their parents.
The primary objective of this motivational camp is to instil the quality of self-discipline, time management, teamwork, patience, tolerance, creativity and appreciation of self-worth in the students through tailor-made activities. The camp also helps the students to identify and unleash their potentials, stay focused and most importantly, to acknowledge the importance of their future education.
This year’s motivational camp was filled with mental and physical challenges as well as activities namely ‘Fun Explorace’, where students were required to complete several obstacles such as, Mobile Banana, Pirates of The Caribbean, Sniper and many others which was conducted and guided by professional facilitators.
Outdoor activities for the mind and physically enduring games such as the signature “Acid River”, “Night Walk” and “Broken Square” were held. For the indoor sessions, additional activities such as “Speed Memory Technique” and “Public Speaking” were introduced. Through Speed Memory Technique, students were encouraged to memorise 40 items in order, then recap the items backwards and randomly name the items based on their numbers and vice-versa. The technique is proven to be useful for the students when it comes to memorising formulas. Public Speaking was also implemented as a platform to enhance the student’s self-confidence as well as their potential towards expressing ideas spontaneously in public.
Azizi Bin Ismail 16, from SMK Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar said, he was initially not confident when selected to join the camp but had come out feeling bold. “I feel really empowered to achieve my dreams now. I promised myself that I can do it and I will never go back on my word,” he said at the closing ceremony of the camp recently.
“The camp made me realise the importance of developing my own self-achievements. It was indeed very challenging yet fun where I gained valuable knowledge through its activities and I made a lot of new friends too,” he added.
Another participant, Nuralifah Binti Arshad 17, from SMK Gelang Patah said, she had learnt how to be tolerant of other people. “It is an amazing experience. I feel like I am more prepared for my future. We were taught that everyone is the same but at the same time we can be anyone we want to be. I will apply tolerance and put aside any selfish feelings when dealing with others,” she said.
“This Motivational Camp is one of UEM Sunrise’s many CSR initiatives designed particularly for the students of our PINTAR Adopted School programme. We organise educational and recreational activities that stimulate their minds, keep them mentally engaged and physically active. Our modules will help develop the students’ positive cognition, educate them on the various aspects of moral values as well as boost their self-confidence”, said Nik Surina Suria Nik Abdullah, Head of Corporate Communication, UEM Sunrise.
“As a caring and responsible corporate citizen, UEM Sunrise facilitates the students with this motivational support to instil into them the importance of adopting the positive attitude and aptitude to excel in life. Our CSR initiatives are aligned with UEM Sunrise’s CSR policy that focuses on Education Enhancement and Community Building”, she added.
