UEM Sunrise’s Library Enhancement Project has entered its third year of implementation which was established under the CSR-Education programme initiatives in its strategic efforts to help raise the academic performance as well as to inculcate good reading habits amongst its PINTAR students in Nusajaya.
Based on “need basis” as the main criterion, one of the UEM Sunrise PINTAR adopted school will be selected every year to receive financial support and assistance in acquiring reading materials and upgraded library facilities for the students’ utilisation. This year, Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Nusa Perintis 1 has been selected based on its highest number of students enrolled compared to other PINTAR schools. The school has more than 700 students and the library facilities were found to be in poor condition with most of the books outdated and worn out.
Under this programme, UEM Sunrise has sponsored and contributed reading materials consisting mostly English story books exclusively selected to fit primary schools preferences. The library refurbishment includes interior equipment such as tables, chairs, curtains, carpets, table skirting, educational posters, wall stickers, wall repaint and repairs worth more than RM30,000.00.
Launching and gracing the event was Nusajaya State Assemblyman, YB Dr Haji Zaini Haji Abu Bakar. “Education sector is highly important in every country as the literacy and education is directly related to the overall good or bad performance of the country. If you have a look at the list of most developed countries of the world you will see a marked difference in their literacy rate of developing or underdeveloped countries”, he said.
“Cultivating the reading habit among people, especially the students is not easy. The reading culture among Malaysians is yet to reach a satisfactory level of awareness, understanding and appreciation. Most of the students only read books to pass the examination. Since inculcating reading habits among Malaysian is still an ongoing effort, the society mainly parents, teachers and schools need to play their roles in supporting the Government’s effort to transform the country to be a developed nation”, he added.
“As a caring and responsible corporate citizen, UEM Sunrise has a responsibility not only to its employees, customers and investors, but also to the various communities in which it operates in. UEM Sunrise’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy is focused on education and community building via educational programmes such as PINTAR programmes and other community engagement efforts”, said En. Nadzari Haji Bachek, Senior General Manager, Nusajaya, UEM Sunrise Berhad.
