UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise” or the “Company”) today held its annual Back-to-School Programme for 77 Orang Asli children from two villages – Kampung Sg. Geroyang and Kampung Sg. Merbau in Tapah, Perak; as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) initiatives.
Aimed at easing the burden of the Orang Asli families in both villages in preparation of the upcoming 2016 school year, the programme which is now in the fourth year running witnessed the support of the Ayer Kuning State Assemblyman, Dato’ Haji Samsudin Abu Hassan; whom was at hand to extend two sets of school uniforms, shoes and socks each to 44 primary and 33 secondary school children on behalf of the Company. Representing UEM Sunrise was Corporate Communication’s General Manager, Nik Surina Suria Nik Abdullah.
According to Nik Surina the number of school going children in the two villages has increased compared to the previous year.
“Last year, we distributed the same school supplies to a total of 55 children and today 77 school going boys and girls have received them, which is a good sign to show that the villages are expanding and education is increasingly becoming a priority,” said Nik Surina.
The Back-to-School Programme is the Company’s second CSR initiative to be implemented this year in Tapah. Earlier, UEM Sunrise upgraded a 186-meter stretch of private road leading to Maahad Tahfiz Al Quran Wal Qiraat Addin Ayer Kuning; which was was initially laid on a sand surface making it a challenge for students and teachers to tread upon, especially during rainy days and monsoon season. Additionally, the school’s outdoor lobby and main gathering area at the porch was also paved with tarmac to give an uplift to the school compound.
UEM Sunrise currently holds 2,405 acres of land in Tapah, representing 18.2% of its total landbank. In line with the Company’s vision of Building Communities of the Future and CSR aspiration of Building Beyond Buildings, UEM Sunrise plans to increase its community outreach by organising more engaging programmes in Tapah.
This year’s Back-to-School Programme also saw the attendance of representatives from the Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli Daerah Batang Padang and the guests who were delighted to be entertained by a traditional Sewang Dance performed by the Orang Asli youth of Kampung Sg. Geroyang.
