KUALA LUMPUR (June 24): UEM Sunrise Bhd (KL:UEMS) and Melati Ehsan Holdings Bhd (KL:MELATI), via their joint venture Mega Legacy (M) Sdn Bhd (MLSB), have officially handed over a standalone building at The Beat 2.0 to Harvey Norman Malaysia.

Spanning approximately 43,000 sq ft, the new facility marks Harvey Norman’s first standalone, solar-powered outlet in Malaysia and is scheduled to open in October 2025.

The Beat 2.0 comprises a two-storey retail block anchored by Harvey Norman, alongside eight double-volume retail units and one additional standalone unit.

It follows the success of The Beat, which achieved full tenancy in December 2023 with anchor tenant Village Grocer and other brands, including Starbucks, Yin’s Sourdough, Inside Scoop, Murni Discovery and Common Space.

Both The Beat and The Beat 2.0 serve as the commercial centre of the Kiara Bay township in Kepong, offering retail and dining options, event spaces and eco-friendly features.

A key sustainability initiative was marked by the signing between MLSB and BM Green Energy Sdn Bhd for the installation of 1,209 photovoltaic and 1,840 building-integrated photovoltaics panels at The Beat 2.0, with a combined capacity of 1,890 kWp.

The installation is being undertaken under a sustainable power purchase agreement with zero capital expenditure by the developer.

The Beat is already equipped with 1,702 rooftop PV panels generating up to 1,004 kWp. Since energisation in March 2025, the system is expected to meet 26% of the retail block’s energy demand and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 80 tonnes per month.

MLSB chairman and UEM Sunrise independent non-executive director Datuk Azmar Talib said, “The handover of The Beat 2.0 marks a key step in realising Kiara Bay’s vision as a connected, liveable and sustainable township. With Harvey Norman’s presence, it enhances The Beat 2.0 appeal as a home and lifestyle destination, drawing both residents and new footfall to the area. This milestone reflects our commitment to building purposeful, community-focused spaces as Kiara Bay continues to evolve and grow.”

Harvey Norman Singapore and Malaysia managing director Bernice Kwok said, “Set within The Beat 2.0, this store reflects the shared commitment between Harvey Norman and the developer to create more responsible retail spaces. It also ties in with our wider push for sustainability, from promoting energy- and water-efficient appliances to offering products made from eco-friendly materials.”
